About Dr. Swaid
Dr. Swaid N. Swaid is a world-renowned neurosurgeon and expert in radiosurgery with vast experience in successfully treating highly complex brain and spine disorders.
He is Board Certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons, is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Medical Association. His peers voted him among Alabama’s top neurosurgeons and he has been named “America’s top Doctor.”
Dr. Swaid participates in stereotactic radiosurgery research and publications, and lectures nationally and internationally on complex brain and spine disorders. His reputation for surgical success in difficult and highly complex cases has brought him patients from all over the world, including China, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Europe, Central and South America. Many high-profile athletes and coaches have also entrusted their neurosurgical care to Dr. Swaid. He provides every patient from all walks of life with the same standard of excellence and compassion.
Born in Galilee in 1952, Dr. Swaid came to the United States in 1969 to attend Harding University at age 16. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harding University in 1973 and came to Birmingham to attend UAB Medical School. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree Cum Laude from UAB Medical School in 1976 and moved to San Diego, California where he completed the general surgical portion of his residency training.
Returning to Birmingham in 1977, he completed his residency in neurological surgery at UAB Medical School as chief neurosurgical resident under the tutelage of famed UAB Neurosurgeon Dr. J. Garber Galbraith. In 1983, Dr. Swaid completed his oral boards of neurological surgery and scored the highest grade in the nation.
He was instrumental in bringing the Gamma Knife to Birmingham and served as the co-medical director of the HealthSouth/UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Gamma Knife Unit for 15 years.
Dr Swaid’s love for medicine and commitment to excellence has driven him to embrace the CyberKnife, the leading technology in Radiosurgery today.

- Appointed by Alabama Governor Bob Riley as Chairman of the Alabama State Certificate of Need Review Board
- Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Brookwood Medical Center
- Chief of the Division of Neuroscience at Brookwood Medical Center
- Chairman, Division of Neuroscience at HealthSouth Medical Center
- Co-Medical Director of the Gamma Knife Unit at UAB/HealthSouth Medical Center
- Medical Director of HealthSouth Medical Center
- Dr. Swaid is married to Christy and has five children. He enjoys spending time with his family, reading and college football.
